In 2009, discovering a gigantic shale oil reserve in North Dakota sounded like good news for an America in crisis.
Soon, more than 16,000 wells were pumping the ground there. But while money and oil flowed, other voices started to emerge. After initially welcoming juicy checks, the local farmers began to feel the industry’s impact on their livestock, lands, and drinking water.
